What is your Ideal Classroom?
Over the past hundred of years, classrooms have stayed remarkably similar. The teacher instructs students from the front of the room while students sit in rows to learn. But, what if this was different? School districts around the country and world are creating a revolution of change in redesigning the ways their classrooms look and function.
If you could design your ideal classroom, what would it look like? Mine one would be one where students are empowered by their learning through passion projects and engaged by the content because they have student choice in what they are learning. Technology is integrated in every content area and students collaborate often with the teacher as a facilitator in their learning. The classroom environment allows for flexible seating with desks that can easily move around, ones that can change levels from sitting to standing, natural light, comfortable and ergonomic seating, and easy movement to form small groups. In addition, the classroom environment is colorful, inviting, and I WOULD WANT TO BE A LEANER IN IT. Schools in Concord, NH have already begun made their ideal classrooms a reality.
Now actually making all of this feasible takes time, effort, and a lot of money. But small changes can be made in your classroom starting TOMORROW! For example, my desk used to sit in the back of my classroom against a wall to make more room for my students, but I never used it. It was only being used for storage, it was bulky, and that space could have been better utilized by my students. So out it went! Now I have more flexible seating options for my students and THEY LOVE IT! My students "fight" every day over whose turn it is to use the standing desk or sit in the butterfly chairs. This small change can have a huge impact on students and their engagement!
